Micro hardness testers, more properly known as microindentation hardness testers, are used to study fine scale changes in hardness in materials for a variety of purposes, such as engineering. Because microindentation testers are used to observe effects at the microscopic level, with results measured in micrometres (one-millionth of a metre), it goes without saying that they are extremely sensitive pieces of equipment with issues of precision and bias being of the greatest important.
Amongst the many factors that can jeopardise the readings generated by microindentation testers — angle of indentation, non-uniform illumination — lateral movement of the indenter or specimen is particularly problematic. Given the scale at which this equipment operates, such lateral movement does not have to be, in itself, significant; even the smallest vibrations can have a measurable impact.
